29th Annual Firefighter Stairclimb
Sunday, March 8th, 2020

The Firefighter Stairclimb welcomes firefighters representing hundreds of fire departments from around the globe with one goal in mind - to raise millions of dollars in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission to provide funding for research and to find cures for blood related cancers. Ultimately, this community-based, voluntary health organization is the voice for all blood cancer patients providing care options, treatment services, and education to improve their quality of life and provide support for their families.

The Firefighter Stairclimb, held annually since 1991, challenges each participant to climb the 69 flights of stairs (1,356 steps) to the renowned observation deck of the iconic Columbia Center in downtown Seattle, Washington in full firefighting gear including breathing apparatus.

For the third straight year, two of our volunteer firefighters, Brian Hobday and Neil Benson participated in the firefighter stairclimb challenge on Sunday, March 10th, 2019, raising funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Competing against 1,459 other firefighters, Brian Hobday completed the challenge in 16 minutes, 46 seconds, placing 213th overall while Neil Benson with a time of 23 minutes, 2 seconds, clinched place #1,125.

As this year’s firefighter climbing competition had a staggering 1,459 firefighters scaling the Seattle tower’s interior stairwell with over fifty pounds of “bunker gear” used in firefighting, the top finishers in the men’s and women’s divisions are worth noting. Kingsley Field USAF Fire Department volunteer, Derek Sherrell, dominated this "world’s largest on-air stair climb competition", landing an amazing time of 11 minutes 03 seconds while Michelle Croft of Columbia River Fire & Rescue captured first place in the women’s division with a time of 15 minutes, 08 seconds giving her bragging rights to the 69th spot overall.
